Massage has been a part of my self-care routine for years and has helped keep my body supple and strong. Whether you are an avid athlete, weekend warrior, or daily lifer, massage can be an extremely effective treatment to reduce existing pain, stress, and tension as well as prevent the build up of future muscle tension.
When it comes to massage, I’m less about how fancy the spa is, and more about how intuitive and skilled the masseuse is. Some of the best massages I’ve had have been at my local chiropractic wellness center.
If you are putting a lot of strain on your body, whether from activity or simply sitting a lot, a monthly massage plus a basic daily yoga practice can work magic on your body. However, I know you’re busy (me too) and months seem to start and finish in a blink of an eye at times. Not to mention massage isn’t cheap, over time the sessions can add up.
I started searching for an alternative solution – an at home massager. There are many different types of massagers out on the market and range in cost from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
I was looking for a simple and affordable solution. I tried a few different massagers but I’ll highlight the one that ended up with – Zyllion Shiatsu Massage Pillow with Heat.
Back in October I was visiting a friend in Austin and tried out the Zyllion massage pillow for the first time, it was love at first massage. I ordered one for myself and have been enjoying it daily.
I’m not a massage pillow expert but I am an expert on my body, so my review of this massage pillow is my personal opinion. Here’s my pros and cons list about the Zyllion.
Zyllion ZMA-13-BK Shiatsu Massage Pillow with Heat
Pros:
- Size: The pillow is small but not too small, when placed at the low back it targets the area just right. It can also be move up to the shoulder and neck or down to the glutes. The compact size makes it easy to travel with or strap on to your body for an on the go massage.
- Deep tissue: I’m not a fan of light massages, my muscles love some painful pleasure with deep tissue work which is why I love the 4 Deep-Kneading Shiatsu Massage Nodes on the Zyllion. These nodes move around in circles and literally dig into the muscles. If you like light swedish style strokes, this may not be the massager for you but if you’re into deep tissue work then I think you’ll love the Zyllion.
- Heat: My favorite part about the Zyllion is that the nodes are heated! Warm heat is applied to your body while the nodes massage away tightness and tension. You have the option to turn the heat off as well.
- Inexpensive: Priced at $40, I found it to be affordable and worth every penny
Cons
- Noise: I don’t have too many complaints about the massage quality itself. The only criticism I have is that the massage pillow is a little loud when turned on, enough that others can hear the noise of the nodes rotating. This isn’t a big deal to me, the massage feels too good to care about the noise.

I mentioned a couple weeks ago that I’m healing a tailbone injury, it’s about 85% healed now and I’ve been able to resume physical activity (yoga, crossfit, running, and finally cycling) with little pain. The Zyllion massager has helped to soothe my sore muscles and improve blood circulation.
