For myself and two of my fellow crossfit ladies, yesterdays team WOD was swim 1.2 miles, bike 56 miles, and run 13.2 miles… for time! Crossfit promotes constantly varied, what better way than to take our skills from the cell and apply them to the outdoors. We participated in the Big Kahuna Team Triathlon in Santa Cruz along with 1200 racers from all over. Our crossfit skills definitely transferred over not just in strength but also perseverance. Somewhere along doing a repetitive movement for a long period of time your mind begins to chime in here and there “I’m tired”, “My muscles ache”, “Why the hell am I doing this?” and that’s when you tell it shut up and you push through to the finish!

Along with strength and perseverance, proper fueling is necessary to make your race a success. I had about 5 hours between waking up and my race time. Even after a nutritionized breakfast I packed carb loaded bars, pb&j sandwiches, energy gels, and fruits to refuel with. It’s important to remember that you can burn on average 3000 calories (depends on distance, speed, weight, and time) if not more when doing distance races. If you are sticking to a Zone, Paleo, Zoleo, or any other type of Nutrition plan, you WILL have to tweak it in order to have enough fuel for your race. Constantly varied does not just apply to movements in the cell but also to your Nutrition. Whether you are training for a race, or sick with flu you have to vary your nutrition to meet your body’s needs. The last thing you want is to not finish a race due to dehydration, low blood sugar, or low energy. I ate all my snacks and energy gels and burned close to 2000 calories during my bike race and spent the rest of my day resting and refueling! Overall it was a great experience, congrats to my TL teammates Harmeet and Stacey. Can’t wait to do another one!
